Seminar on Diversity and Democracy

Seminar on Diversity and Democracy
by Mahendra Lawoti, Associate Professor of Political Science, Western Michigan University, USA
(in collaboration with Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS))
26-27 October, 2010, Kathmandu

The reading seminar led by Mahendra Lawoti focused on elements of diversity and democracy within the modern nation-states and more specifically on how diversity has sometimes become problematic and how it can be celebrated for the benefit of society. Incorporating readings on multiculturalism; individual, collective and minority rights; universal citizenship; federalism; and political institutions, Lawoti tried to elaborate on the problems created by majoritarian and power-sharing institutions in democracies.
