This episode focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken by the government to slow its spread, particularly the ongoing nationwide lockdown, on the Nepali economy, the labour market and on the millions of Nepali migrant workers currently stranded abroad or stuck at home.

Hanna Geschewski spoke to economist Dr Achyut Wagle and labour migration expert Dr Jeevan Baniya. 

Dr Wagle has a PhD in economics and Professor at the Kathmandu University School of Management. He also writes a weekly op-ed column in The Kathmandu Post/Kantipur Daily, which is Nepal’s largest media and publication house.

Dr Baniya has a PhD in political science from the University of Oslo and is the Assistant Director at Social Science Baha, a Kathmandu-based research organisation. He has been involved in research and teaching on issues related to labour and migration, governance, democracy, state-society relations and disasters, among others.
