Bihari Krishna Fellowship for Ethnographic Research
for the year 2013

The Bihari Krishna Fellowship for Ethnographic Research was established in 2011 with a grant of Rs 5 million provided by Bihari Krishna Shrestha to Social Science Baha with the express purpose of setting up a fellowship devoted to ethnographic research in Nepal.

Applications are invited from researchers interested in working with any one of the following possible mentors and on the themes they have chosen:

1. Prof Ram Bahadur Chhetri (Professor of Anthropology, Central Department of Sociology/Anthropology, Tribhuvan University):

  • Natural Resource Management and Local Institutions
  • Perceptions and Experiences on Climate Change among Nepal’s Farmers

2. Dr Rajendra Pradhan (Dean, Nepā School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Kathmandu)

  • Local Disputing Processes
  • Social Change in a Village in the Past 50 years, with Particular Reference to Gender Relations

3. Dr Jeevan R. Sharma (Lecturer in South Asia and International Development, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh)

  • Nepal-India Border
  • Brokers and Brokerage
  • Masculinities
  • Political Uses of Social Science Knowledge
  • Demographic Transition in Nepal

The selected Fellow will be based at Nepā School of Social Sciences and Humanities during the course of the fellowship.

Number of fellowships: One

Qualification required: Master’s degree in any social science discipline or a four-year bachelor’s degree with a social science major, and demonstrable English language skills

Duration of fellowship: 18 months (including pre-field visit preparation = 6 months; fieldwork = 6 months; and analysis and writing, presentation of findings and draft manuscript for publication = 6 months)

Maximum budget for fellowship: Rs 500,000 (five hundred thousand rupees only)
