Affirmative Action in Nepal
Affirmative Action in Nepal: Learning from Experiences Elsewhere
(in collaboration with Enabling State Programme/DFID Nepal)
17 November, 2003
The Social Science Baha brought together some of Nepal’s academics, journalists, activists, policy-makers, and politicians for a day-long workshop to understand the experience of affirmative action in other countries. The objective of the workshop was to provide an insight into what might be called the ‘best practices’ of such programmes elsewhere and hopefully help Nepal avoid drawbacks that have surfaced over the years. The resource persons for the workshop were Neera Chandoke and Gopal Guru from the University of Delhi and Nico Steytler from the University of Western Cape, South Africa.
Public lectures were delivered by Prof Chandhoke (‘Locating Affirmative Action’) and Prof Steytler (‘Affirmative Action in South Africa’) on 18 November, 2003, at the Russian Cultural Centre, Kathmandu.
