On-going Activities

The Baha works with various organisations (both local and international) to carry out projects—some research-based, others not—that are especially relevant to Nepal’s politics, economy and society. Most of these projects seek to either popularise ideas generated within the academia or to create outreach programmes through which lay people can gain access to areas of governance or through which they are empowered to engage with political, social, and economic issues that affect their lives.

Weekly Reading Seminar Series

The Weekly Reading Seminar Series seeks to bring together university and college faculty and other interested individuals and engage them in critical scholarly debate in a particular thematic area. It has been conceived as an interdisciplinary platform for continuous academic engagement in order to make the teaching and learning experience a challenging and rewarding one for the faculty as well as their students.

Faculty Development Programme

Faculty Development Programme
The programme has been aimed at increasing the capacity of the faculty to enhance the teaching-learning environment in the future for autonomous community campuses. The Programme works with nine colleges that teach the social sciences-eight autonomous community colleges and the one constituent campus of Tribhuvan University which has gained autonomy. The Programme is organising a pilot Faculty Reading Seminar 2011/12.

Biomedical and Health Experimentation in South Asia: Critical perspectives on collaboration, governance and competition’ is a collaborative research project involving researchers from Centre for South Asian Studies at the University of Edinburgh; Department of Anthropology, University of Durham; Feinstein International Centre, Tufts University; Anusadhan Trust in India; Social Science Baha in Nepal and the Human Genetics Unit (HGU) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

Interactive Mapping and Archive Project

Duration: 1 March, 2009 to 28 February, 2011

With the support of Ford Foundation, the Social Science Baha began the Interactive Mapping and Archive Project (IMAP) with the objective of creating a digital archive for the art and theatre scene of the Kathmandu Valley. The idea behind IMAP is to map the cultural space of the Valley by archiving the work of cultural institutions and independent artists working on contemporary art and theatre. The project began by identifying and archiving the materials of key institutions and artists followed by the setting up of a website for the archive.

Alliance for Social Dialogue

1 April, 2007 to 31 May, 2010 (third year of project cycle)

The Alliance for Social Dialogue (ASD) was started in 2007 with the aim of promoting dialogue within Nepal on a variety of issues, including but not limited to the promotion of democratic values and institutions in Nepal. The ASD itself is an unincorporated body comprising like-minded individuals working towards a common purpose. The ASD Secretariat is located at the Social Science Baha.
One of the functions of the ASD is to facilitate grant-making in Nepal by the New York-based Open Society Institute (OSI), which has also been supporting the activities of the ASD and the Secretariat.
